Metronidazole Cream: Indications, How to Use & Side Effects

Metronidazole cream is a medication with antibacterial action that is prescribed to treat combat bacterial vaginosis or other vaginal infections. It can be effective against Gardnerella vaginalis bacteria, as well as Trichomonas vaginalis bacteria, and should be used as prescribed by your doctor.

Metronidazole is commonly packaged in tubes with single-use applicators that allow for the cream to be injected inside the vagina. Applicators are then discarded.

Common indications

Metronidazole cream is often prescribed for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis. It has antimicrobial activity that helps to restore vaginal flora and to regulate other bacteria contributing to this infection, like Bacteroides spp. Gardnerella vaginalis, Mobiluncus spp. and Peptostreptococcus spp.

How to use

Metronidazole cream should be used as prescribed by a doctor. It is usually prescribed for a duration of 5 days, to be used once or twice a day. 

To use metronidazole cream you should:

  1. Remove the cap from the tube.
  2. Attach the applicator to the tube.
  3. Press the base of the tube to fill the applicator with cream.
  4. Remove the the applicator from the tube. 
  5. Insert the applicator into the vagina and push the applicator plunger until it is completely empty.

Some women may find it easier to insert the cream while laying down.

The action of the medication is not affected by menstruation, however, whenever possible, the treatment should be done between menstrual cycles.

Possible side effects

Some of the side effects that may occur during treatment with metronidazole cream are vaginal burning, itching, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, and skin reactions. It is important to disclose any side effects you may have to your prescriber, so that adjustments to treatment can be made as needed. 

Contraindications for use

This medication is contraindicated for children, men, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and people who are allergic to metronidazole or other components present in the formula.
